5 Great N Scale Layouts

5 Great N Scale Layouts

We here at Model Trains for Beginners tend to focus on HO scale. Not only is that because I model in HO but HO is still the most popular scale among railroad modelers worldwide. That said, though, N scale is currently the fastest growing scale in popularity. That is due, in no small part, to N scale’s lower costs and the ability to fit more layout into a small space. I’ve combed through YouTube and to find 5 great n scale layouts that can hopefully inspire you, or at the very least entertain you.

LAYOUT TOUR – N Scale – Norfolk Southern / CSX – Charleston, Roanoke and Eastern Railway

This 23-minute video by NSTrainFan is a tour of tour of Marcus Neubacher’s N scale Charleston, Roanoke and Eastern Railway, which features Norfolk Southern and CSX operations in the late 1980s to early 1990s. This is a large layout that features multi-person, realistic operating sessions, using a combination of CTC (centralized traffic control) and track warrants to control trains.

This 25-minute video by Railfan Jason is part one of a multi-part series featuring an operating session on Jon Percy’s Buffalo and Pittsburgh layout, by the KCAMANS – the Kansas City Area Mutual Aid’N Society. As with the video above this one, this layout features authentic operating sessions, and you can see and hear how detailed they get within the first minute of the video.

Manned Helper Operations on N Scale Tehachapi Pass Model Railroad Layout (HD)

This 25-minute video by Tehachapi Pass in N Scale is a single train operation featuring crewed helpers pushing the train over the pass. Very little dialogue or narration in this one, as it focuses on just showing the detailed operations.

N-scale layout – BN, BNSF, and more

This 22-minutue video is a compilation of shorter clips of Steven Johnson’s N scale BN/BNSF model railroad. In addition to BN & BNSF trains of the 1990s to early 2000s, it also feature UP, CP, SP, MRL, and Amtrak trains.

My N Scale 12.6 ft x 8.6 ft layout complete

This 14-minute video by Rob White features CN & BN operations on his 12.6 ft. x 8.6 ft. layout, which is an expansion of his original 4 ft. x 8 ft. layout. This video really shows how an N scale layout can really pack a lot of scenery and railroading into a small space.

There you go, 5 great N scale layouts. I hope you enjoyed these videos as much as I did, and that you can find some inspiration in them, too.
